Achieve Facial Harmony

Even the smallest imbalances in the nasal structure can offset the attractiveness of the face. The nose plays a critical role in defining overall facial harmony, and nasal insecurities can lead to lasting damage to one’s self-confidence. Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) can refine the nose’s size and shape and correct breathing problems associated with the nasal passage.

Dr. Ghere offers a personalized approach to each of her patients’ needs, carefully considering their unique nasal structure and aesthetic needs.

Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty enhances facial harmony by sculpting the nose to be well-balanced with the rest of the face. Many rhinoplasty candidates are interested in correcting irregularities associated with congenital abnormalities or traumatic nasal injuries.

The ideal candidate for nose surgery is looking to reduce or accentuate the overall size of the nose, smooth out nasal bumps or humps, straighten a crooked nose, widen or narrow the nostrils, or adjust the size, projection, and prominence of the nasal tip.

While rhinoplasty is performed to improve aesthetic concerns, it can also correct deviated septums and improve breathing with a surgical variation known as septoplasty.

Candidates should be in good health without any underlying health conditions that could impair healing.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Rhinoplasty generally takes two to three hours to perform, although the extent of corrections will determine the length of the procedure. Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.

Because the anesthesia administered will still be in effect after surgery, you will need someone to drive you home.

The technique used for your rhinoplasty will depend on the type and severity of your correction.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is often chosen for noses that require significant adjustment as it allows for increased visibility during the surgery. Open rhinoplasty is performed through an incision made across the columella (the tissue at the bottom of the nose that separates the two nostrils). This external incision allows Dr. Ghere to lift back the skin of the nose to see the internal structure.

Dr. Ghere will adjust the bone and cartilage according to your cosmetic needs. The septum may also be adjusted if needed. After your nose is sculpted to the desired shape, the tissue and skin of the nose are redraped, and the incisions are closed.

If augmentation is needed, Dr. Ghere can take grafts from septal or ear cartilage.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty is preferred by patients who require minor to moderate nasal correction. This technique only uses incisions made within the nostrils—meaning zero external incisions and no visible scarring. This technique requires shorter surgical and recovery times.

What Should I Expect for My Rhinoplasty Recovery?

A splint or bandage may be used to support and protect the nose during recovery. Rhinoplasty patients will need roughly one week of downtime before returning to work, school, or social engagements. After Dr. Ghere has determined that your nose has properly healed, strenuous exercises and physical activities can be continued; otherwise, such activities should be avoided.

Stitches are typically removed after six or seven days.

What Will My Rhinoplasty Results Be Like?

The results of nose surgery will become more evident as the swellings subside over the coming weeks and months. It may take up to a year to see the final results of your rhinoplasty. Your final results can offer long-lasting or near-permanent results, restoring both facial balance and self-esteem for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rhinoplasty

  • How much does rhinoplasty cost in Baton Rouge?

Plastic surgery procedures are tailored to the individual, and the cost of your rhinoplasty in Baton Rouge will vary depending on the corrections made, techniques chosen, and procedures combined. Additional cost factors include anesthesia, facility, and surgeon fees. Dr. Ghere will provide you with an accurate cost estimate after your consultation.

  • Will my rhinoplasty leave scars?

Although no surgical procedure is without scarring, rhinoplasty does allow for the least amount of scarring. Patients who undergo open rhinoplasty will only have a small “zig-zag” scar across the columella that would only be visible if someone looked up at the nose. Patients who choose closed rhinoplasty will have no external scarring, as all incisions are made within the nostrils.

  • Will I see my rhinoplasty results sooner than one year?

Patients should prepare to have residual scarring for up to one year; however, that doesn’t mean they won’t see their results sooner. Most initial rhinoplasty results are visible within a few weeks and continue to improve with time.

  • Will I be able to breathe through my nose while I am recovering from nose surgery?

Initially, your nose will be packed with gauze. This can make breathing through the nose very difficult. It is important to remember that it is the bandages that are causing the problem and not a functional concern. Most patients only require gauze bandages for a few days.

  • Can I undergo rhinoplasty as a teenager?

Rhinoplasty is one of the few procedures that is approved for teenagers. Rhinoplasty can be safely performed on a teenager as long as his/her nose is fully developed. This usually occurs around 14 for girls and 16 for boys. Teenagers interested in rhinoplasty must be emotionally mature enough to process and understand the surgical procedure.
