Am I Too Old for Cosmetic Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)?

Posted September 08, 2022 in Otoplasty

3 Minute Read:

Having large or protruding ears is one of the most common cosmetic issues. If you have ears that are too large (or small) for your face, or they stick out from the side of your head, then you know how embarrassing this can be.

To make matters worse, this biological issue doesn’t go away or get better on its own, which means that if you struggle with large ears as a child, you will continue to have the same frustrations as an adult.

While many parents choose to have their children (over the age of six) undergo ear surgery to help give them a more natural and balanced look, a significant portion of kids with large and/or protruding ears do not have this opportunity.

What this means is that they grow up carrying the same cosmetic concern.

Whether they have been (or still are being) bullied or teased for their large ears, or they simply want to correct their cosmetic issue for once and for all, ear surgery can be performed at any age to offer stunning results.

How Is Ear Surgery Performed?

Otoplasty (corrective ear surgery) is one of the most transformational cosmetic surgical procedures that men, women, teenagers, and children can have.

This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia to ensure that you do not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

Once the anesthesia has been administered, Dr. Ghere will make the incisions. Depending on the type of correction being made, these incisions may be on the back of the ears or in the creases of the ears. Dr. Ghere will then make the necessary corrections.

This may include removing cartilage and/or skin from the ears. The cartilage can also be manipulated into a more natural position and secured with the use of internal sutures (this is often referred to as “ear pinning”).

This procedure generally takes about two hours to complete.

How Can Otoplasty Help Me?

Whatever your age, undergoing otoplasty can be a life-changing experience. That is because correcting the size, shape, and projection of your ears can create a dramatic change to your facial structure and appearance.

Because of this, otoplasty is one of the most trusted procedures available, with over 53,000 procedures performed in 2020. And if you need more reasons why you should consider otoplasty, some of your favorite celebrities have undergone this procedure to help them achieve the appearance they’ve always wanted.

If you suffer from large ears, then there is a good chance that you have experienced unwanted attention from others, whether in the form of comments, teases, or stares, which can all drastically affect your sense of self-confidence.

After undergoing a successful otoplasty, you can look in the mirror and smile at the reflection you see. No longer will you need to worry about what others say or think about your ears, since your ears should no longer distract from the rest of your facial appearance

Many patients find a new sense of confidence and comfort in themselves and the way they look and feel after their otoplasty. And the best part of this procedure is that you can have these same results from otoplasty no matter how young or old you may be.

How Can I Get More Out of My Otoplasty Procedure?

While otoplasty results can be transformative to your entire facial aesthetic, many patients choose to combine their otoplasty with other facial procedures to achieve an even more complete change to their appearance.

Some of the procedures often combined with ear surgery include:
