Who Invented Fat Transfer?

Fat grafting is a natural and popular cosmetic treatment that can enhance the appearance of the face, breasts, hands, and buttocks by taking fat from areas in which you have excess and re-injecting the purified fat into areas that lack volume.

Fat transfer uses liposuction to harvest fat from parts of your body and injects that fat into other areas that could benefit from additional volume.

Fat transfer is a body contouring procedure that harvests fat and injects it through a syringe into another area of the body.

Since the procedure uses your fat to plump other areas of the body, it has long-term benefits and may come with less risk than other volume enhancement techniques.

When Was the First Fat Transfer Performed?

The concept of fat grafting has been around for a long time, 127 years, to be exact.

The first ‘fat grafting’ procedure was performed in 1893 by a German plastic surgeon named Gustav Neuber. Neuber transferred fat from the arm to the eye region to address scars caused by a bone infection.

Initially, fat grafting was rejected by people who questioned its safety and were concerned with its complications.

Now, with countless contributions and advancements in plastic surgery, fat grafting is the preferred method when it comes to enhancing areas with natural fat deposits.

Is Fat Transfer Safe?

As with any plastic surgery procedure, complications and risks are possible. While potential risks can accompany fat grafting, it has gained a positive track record and is widely considered a safe method with benefits that outweigh the potential risks.

Fat transfer has been effective in restoring volume in areas that have lost youthful fat or areas that lack volume naturally. Not only is fat grafting effective in reaching your aesthetic goals, but it also has regenerative properties.

Fat grafts can rejuvenate your skin, reverse damaged skin tissue, and treat autoimmune skin disorders.

This treatment is described as a healing method because of the extent of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) found within fatty tissues that can recreate multiple types of cells in the skeletal tissue.

The most common areas for fat transfer are the:

  • Face
  • Breast
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Hands and feet
